Short answer: an 8x10 rug is the right size for a queen bed. Turn it sideways so the 10-foot side runs across the bed, and slide it under the lower two-thirds of the bed, stopping just in front of the nightstands. A king or California king needs a 9x12; a full bed a 6x9; a twin a 5x8.
The goal of a bedroom rug isn't to frame the bed for a photo. It's to make sure your feet land on something soft when you get out of bed. That's why the rug needs to extend past the sides of the bed, not just peek out at the foot.

Rug Size by Bed Size
| Bed | Mattress size (approx.) | Rug size | How it sits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Twin | 38" x 75" | 5' x 8' | Sideways under the lower part of the bed |
| Full | 54" x 75" | 6' x 9' | Sideways, extends past both sides |
| Queen | 60" x 80" | 8' x 10' | Sideways under the lower two-thirds |
| King | 76" x 80" | 9' x 12' | Sideways under the lower two-thirds |
| California king | 72" x 84" | 9' x 12' | Sideways under the lower two-thirds |
A queen mattress is 5 feet wide. Turned sideways, an 8x10 rug is 10 feet across, so it extends about 2.5 feet past each side of the mattress (a little less past the bed frame). That's a comfortable landing zone on both sides.
How to Place a Bedroom Rug

- Turn the rug sideways. The long side runs parallel to the headboard wall.
- Start just in front of the nightstands. The nightstands sit on the bare floor; the rug starts about where the pillows end.
- Let it run past the foot of the bed. An 18 to 24 inch strip beyond the foot of the bed looks balanced and catches a bench if you have one.
- Center it on the bed, not the room.
If you'd rather have the nightstands on the rug too, size up: a 9x12 under a queen covers everything, including the nightstands, and makes a smaller bedroom feel more pulled-together. Just check it still leaves floor around the edges.
When the Ideal Rug Won't Fit
Bedrooms are often smaller than the furniture assumes. Because the headboard wall doesn't need a visible border, our rug size calculator uses a 12-inch floor border for bedrooms. Here's what it recommends in a few common room sizes:
| Bedroom | Bed | Ideal rug | What fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12' x 12' | Queen | 8' x 10' | 8' x 10' fits |
| 12' x 11' | Queen | 8' x 10' | 8' x 10' fits |
| 11' x 10' | Queen | 8' x 10' | 6' x 9' under the foot of the bed |
| 10' x 10' | Queen | 8' x 10' | 5' x 8' under the foot of the bed |
| 14' x 12' | King | 9' x 12' | 9' x 12' fits |
| 12' x 12' | King | 9' x 12' | 8' x 10' under the foot of the bed |
In the smaller rooms, a smaller rug placed under the foot of the bed still gives you a soft spot where you stand to make the bed, and it doesn't fight with the walls.
The Runner Alternative

When a big rug won't fit, or you have beautiful wood floors you don't want to cover, use two runners, one along each side of the bed:
- Size: about 2.5 x 8 ft runners fit alongside most queen and king beds.
- Placement: start them just in front of the nightstands and run them toward the foot of the bed.
- Bonus: runners are easy to wash and move, and they work well in rentals.
A single smaller rug at the foot of the bed plus a runner on the side you get out of most often is another option for very tight rooms.
King Beds Need a Bigger Rug Than You'd Think

A king mattress is over 6 feet wide. An 8x10 under a king leaves only about 22 inches of rug past each side of the mattress, which looks skimpy next to a bed that size. A 9x12 extends about 34 inches past each side, close to the generous margin a queen gets on an 8x10.
Choosing the Rug Itself
- Go soft. The bedroom is the one room where a plush, higher-pile rug makes sense, since there's little traffic and no chairs to drag.
- Wool or a wool blend feels warm underfoot and wears well.
- Use a rug pad. It adds cushion and stops the rug from creeping when you sit on the edge of the bed.
- Match the scale of the pattern to the room. A large, soft pattern looks calmer under a bed than a busy small print.

Quick Questions
Can I use a 5x8 under a queen bed? Only if the room is too small for anything larger. A 5x8 turned sideways barely reaches past the sides of a queen bed, so it works best placed at the foot of the bed, with runners along the sides.
Should the rug go under the nightstands? It's a style choice. Stopping just in front of the nightstands is the most common approach and needs the smallest rug. Covering the nightstands too means sizing up to a 9x12 for a queen.
Does the rug need to be centered on the room? No. Center it on the bed. If the bed is off-center because of a window or door, the rug follows the bed.
What about a bed on a platform frame or with a bench at the foot? Measure the frame, not the mattress, and keep the bench fully on the rug so its legs don't rock on the edge.
The Bottom Line
- Queen bed: 8' x 10', turned sideways under the lower two-thirds of the bed.
- King or California king: 9' x 12'. Full: 6' x 9'. Twin: 5' x 8'.
- Start the rug in front of the nightstands and let it run 18 to 24 inches past the foot of the bed.
- In a small bedroom, use a smaller rug under the foot of the bed or two runners along the sides.
