How the Calculator Picks a Size
Living Room
The rug must be at least as wide as your sofa plus 6 in on each side. We then pick the largest standard size that still leaves a floor border, because a too-small rug is the most common mistake.
Dining Room
We add 24 in to every side of the table so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out, then choose the smallest standard size that covers it and fits the room.
Bedroom
Queen beds get an 8×10 and king beds a 9×12, run sideways under the lower two-thirds of the bed. If that won't fit, we suggest the largest size that does.
Rug Size Cheat Sheet
| Room & furniture | Typical rug size |
|---|---|
| Living room, loveseat or small sofa | 6' × 9' |
| Living room, standard 84–90 in sofa | 8' × 10' |
| Living room, large or sectional | 9' × 12' or 10' × 14' |
| Dining table for 4 (48 in round or 60 in) | 8' × 8' round or 8' × 10' |
| Dining table for 6 (72 in) | 8' × 10' |
| Dining table for 8 (96 in) | 9' × 12' |
| Bedroom, twin / full | 5' × 8' / 6' × 9' |
| Bedroom, queen | 8' × 10' |
| Bedroom, king or California king | 9' × 12' |
These are starting points for typical rooms. Your room size decides the final answer, which is why the calculator checks the floor border too.
Measuring Tips
Tape it out first. Mark the rug’s outline on the floor with painter’s tape and live with it for a day. It’s the easiest way to see if a size feels right before you buy.
Measure the seating area, not just the room. In open-plan spaces, the rug defines the living area, so size it to the furniture grouping and keep walkways clear.
Check door swings. Thick rugs can catch on doors. Leave a gap at doorways or choose a low-pile rug near them.

Frequently Asked Questions
Most living rooms need an 8x10 or 9x12 rug. The rug should be at least as wide as your sofa plus about 6 inches on each side, and big enough that the front legs of the sofa and chairs sit on it. Leave roughly 12 to 18 inches of bare floor between the rug and the walls.
Usually, yes. A 5x8 is narrower than most sofas, so it ends up floating in front of the furniture and makes the room look smaller. It works in a very small room, in front of a loveseat, or layered on top of a larger natural-fiber rug.
Add about 24 inches on every side of the table. That way, chair legs stay on the rug when someone pulls a chair out to sit down. For a standard 72 x 40 inch table, that means a rug at least 7.5 x 10 feet, so an 8x10.
An 8x10 rug suits a queen bed and a 9x12 suits a king or California king. Run the rug sideways under the lower two-thirds of the bed so it extends past both sides, where your feet land when you get up.
Aim for 12 to 18 inches of floor showing between the rug and the walls in a typical room, and 8 to 12 inches in a very small room. The border frames the rug and keeps it from looking like wall-to-wall carpet.
