How We Write Our Guides

Cozy Spruce guides are written by the Cozy Spruce editorial team. Here is how we research them, check the numbers and keep them up to date.

Numbers come from the same formulas as our calculators

Every quantity in a DIY or garden guide (gallons, bags, sheets, boxes, pounds of seed) is produced by the same code that runs our free calculators, and the worked math is written out in the article so you can check it.

When a calculator changes, we re-run the examples in every article that uses it. In October 2026 we audited all of our calculators against industry methods and corrected the articles that depended on them.

Where our rules of thumb come from

Sizing and clearance guidance follows published industry references: NKBA kitchen and bath planning guidelines for islands and aisles, lighting industry rules for fixture size and hanging height, manufacturer coverage rates for paint, stain, grout and insulation, and university extension seeding rates for lawns.

Where a number varies by product, region or code, we say so and tell you what to confirm with the label, your installer or your local building department.

How we use AI

Our guides are drafted with the help of AI writing tools and then checked against our calculators and the references above before they are published. Most photos on the site are AI-generated illustrations made to show a style or a step clearly; they are not photos of specific products.

Product boxes link to Amazon so you can see real product photos, current prices and reviews before you buy.

Product recommendations

We recommend product types and well-known brands that fit the advice in the article. We don't show prices or star ratings ourselves, because they change constantly; the Amazon page is always the source of truth.

We earn a commission on qualifying purchases, which never changes the price you pay and doesn't decide what we recommend.

Updates and corrections

Articles show an “Updated” date when we make a meaningful change. If you spot an error, a broken link or a number that doesn't add up, tell us and we will review and fix it.
