What Size Art Above a Couch? (Size, Height & Spacing Guide)

Art above a couch should span about two-thirds to three-quarters of the sofa's width and hang about 8 to 10 inches above the sofa back. For an 84-inch sofa that's a 56 to 63 inch piece or group. Here's the rule, examples and the mistakes to avoid.

Short answer: art above a couch should span about two-thirds to three-quarters of the sofa's width, and its bottom edge should sit about 8 to 10 inches above the top of the sofa back. For a typical 84-inch sofa, that's a single piece or a group about 56 to 63 inches wide, such as one 60 x 40 inch canvas or a pair of 30 x 24 inch frames.

Most living rooms get one of two things wrong: art that's too small for the sofa, or art hung so high it floats on the wall. Size it to the furniture and hang it close, and the sofa and art read as one composition.

The Rules in One Table

RuleMeasurement
Width over furniture2/3 to 3/4 of the furniture width
Gap above furniture8 to 10 inches (we use 9")
Bare wall (no furniture)Center of the art at 57 inches from the floor
Spacing between pieces in a groupAbout 2.5 inches

The width rule applies to the whole group when you hang more than one piece: measure from the left edge of the first frame to the right edge of the last.

Art Sizes for Common Sofas

These numbers come from our wall art size calculator, using a sofa back about 34 inches tall (32 inches for the 72-inch sofa) and standard landscape frames.

Sofa widthArt or group width1 piece2 pieces3 pieces
72"48–54"48 x 36 frameTwo 24 x 18 (50.5" total)Smaller frames fall short; use 2 pieces
84"56–63"60 x 40 frameTwo 30 x 24 (62.5" total)Three 18"-wide frames (59" total)
96"64–72"Oversized piece, about 64–72" wideLarger than standard framesThree 20 x 16 (65" total)

For the 84-inch sofa, the bottom edge of the art lands about 43 inches above the floor (a 34-inch sofa back plus 9 inches).

Three standard 20 x 16 frames with 2.5-inch gaps make a 65-inch group, just over the 63-inch maximum for an 84-inch sofa. Two easy fixes: tighten the gaps to 1.5 inches (exactly 63 inches), or hang three 18 x 24 frames in portrait orientation, which makes a 59-inch group.

One Big Piece, a Pair or a Trio?

  • One large piece makes the strongest, calmest statement and is the easiest to get right. On a 96-inch sofa, the largest common standard frame (60 x 40) falls short of the 64-inch minimum, so look for an oversized canvas or flank a 60-inch piece with wall sconces to widen the arrangement.
  • A pair works well on 72 to 84-inch sofas. Keep both pieces the same size and hang them at the same height.
  • A trio suits longer sofas (around 96 inches) or portrait-orientation art. Treat the three as one unit and keep the gaps consistent.

Beyond the Sofa: Beds and Consoles

The same rules work over any furniture:

FurnitureWidthArt or group widthSuggested frameBottom edge
Queen headboard (50" tall)64"42.5–48"One 48 x 36, or two 20 x 16About 59" from the floor
Console or sideboard (30" tall)48"32–36"One 36 x 24About 39" from the floor

Over a bed, leave the same 8 to 10 inches above the top of the headboard. Lighter frames and secure hanging hardware are worth it here, for obvious reasons.

On a bare wall with no furniture below, hang art so its center sits at 57 inches from the floor, which is roughly average eye level. On a 60-inch stretch of wall, a piece about 30 to 40 inches wide (for example, a 36 x 24 frame) looks right.

Common Mistakes

A small print hung too high above a long sofa

  1. Art that's too small. A single 16 x 20 print above an 84-inch sofa looks lost. If you love a small piece, give it a large mat and frame, or build a group around it.
  2. Hanging it too high. Art floating 2 feet above the sofa disconnects from the furniture. Keep the gap to 8 to 10 inches.
  3. Centering on the wall instead of the sofa. Center the art on the furniture below it, even if the sofa isn't centered on the wall.
  4. Uneven gaps in a group. Measure and mark every nail before you hang anything; small differences in spacing are surprisingly visible.
  5. Forgetting the hanging hardware. The hanger sits below the top of the frame. Measure from the top of the frame to the tightened wire or D-ring and subtract it when you mark the nail.

Cut paper templates the size of each frame and tape them to the wall before you drill. You can see the size and spacing from across the room, then nail straight through the template.

Pulling the Room Together

Art is the last layer of a room, after the rug and curtains. If you're still sizing those, see what size rug for a living room and how high to hang curtains. For arranging the furniture itself, read our guide to small living room furniture arrangement.

Quick Questions

What if my sofa is against a short wall? The art can never be wider than the wall allows. If the wall is narrow, size the art to the wall section (about half to two-thirds of it) rather than to the sofa.

Is a gallery wall a good idea above a sofa? Yes, as long as the outer edges of the whole arrangement follow the same two-thirds to three-quarters rule. Lay the frames out on the floor first, then tape paper templates to the wall.

Does the rule change for a sectional? Size the art to the section of the sofa it hangs above, usually the longer side, not the full length of the sectional.

The Bottom Line

  • Art over furniture should span 2/3 to 3/4 of the furniture's width.
  • Hang it 8 to 10 inches above the sofa back or headboard.
  • 84-inch sofa: one 60 x 40, two 30 x 24, or three 18-inch-wide frames.
  • On a bare wall, center the art at 57 inches from the floor.
  • Treat a group as one piece and keep the gaps even (about 2.5 inches).
