The Three Rules Behind the Calculator
Width: 2/3 to 3/4
Over furniture, the art (or the whole group) spans two-thirds to three-quarters of the furniture's width. On a bare wall, half to two-thirds of the wall section.
Height: 8–10 in above
Leave 8 to 10 in between the furniture and the bottom of the frame. On a bare wall, center the art at 57 in from the floor.
Groups: one unit
Space pieces 2–3 in apart and measure the whole group as if it were one frame, then center it on the furniture.
Quick Size Chart
| Furniture | Art width | Closest single frame |
|---|---|---|
| 72 in sofa | 48–54 in | 48 × 36 in |
| 84 in sofa | 56–63 in | 60 × 40 in |
| Queen headboard (64 in) | 42.5–48 in | 48 × 36 in |
| 48 in console or dresser | 32–36 in | 36 × 24 in |
More examples, including two- and three-piece groups, are in our guide to what size art goes above a couch.
Frequently Asked Questions
Art above a couch should span about two-thirds to three-quarters of the couch's width. For an 84 inch sofa, that's roughly 56 to 63 inches wide, either as one large piece or a group of smaller pieces hung as a unit.
Leave about 8 to 10 inches between the top of the sofa back and the bottom of the frame. Much higher and the art feels disconnected from the furniture; much lower and people will bump it when they lean back.
Hang it so the center of the art is about 57 inches from the floor, which is average eye level. Galleries use the same rule. For a group, the center of the whole group goes at 57 inches.
Keep 2 to 3 inches between frames so the group reads as one piece. Wider gaps make the pictures look scattered, especially above a sofa or bed.
A queen headboard is about 60 to 64 inches wide, so aim for art around 42 to 48 inches wide, hung 8 to 10 inches above the top of the headboard. Two pieces side by side or one wide landscape piece both work.
