The Rules We Use
Height: ceiling minus topper
Subtract the topper's height from the ceiling. For a real tree, also subtract about 4 in for the stand; artificial tree heights already include it.
Width: by shape
A full tree is roughly 0.62 × its height across the lowest branches, a slim tree about 0.45 × and a pencil tree about 0.3 ×.
Lights, ornaments & garland
About 100 mini lights and 15 ornaments per foot of a full tree (less for slim trees). Garland is a spiral with wraps about 12 in apart, plus 15% for drape.
Tree Size by Ceiling Height
| Ceiling | Tree (6 in topper) | Width | Lights | Ornaments | Garland |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7 ft | 6.5 ft | 48 in | 650 | 100 | 50 ft |
| 8 ft | 7.5 ft | 56 in | 750 | 115 | 65 ft |
| 9 ft | 8 ft | 60 in | 800 | 120 | 75 ft |
| 10 ft | 9 ft | 67 in | 900 | 135 | 95 ft |

Frequently Asked Questions
A 7.5 ft artificial tree fits under an 8 ft ceiling with a topper up to about 6 inches tall. With a taller topper, or a real tree in a stand, choose a 7 ft tree.
A common rule is about 100 mini lights per foot of tree height for a full tree, so a 7.5 ft tree takes about 750 lights. Use about 50 per foot for a simple look and 150 or more for a bright, glowing tree.
Plan on 10 to 20 ornaments per foot of tree height. A full 7.5 ft tree looks well decorated with about 115 ornaments of mixed sizes; slim and pencil trees need fewer.
Wrapped in a loose spiral with rows about a foot apart, a full 7.5 ft tree uses about 65 feet of garland. Draping it in swags between branches uses a little more.
A full 7.5 ft tree is usually around 55 to 60 inches wide at the bottom, a slim one about 40 inches and a pencil tree under 30 inches. Measure your floor space before you buy.
