The Sizing Rules We Use
Width: room or table
Room rule: diameter in inches ≈ room length + width in feet. Over a table: 1/2 to 2/3 of the table width; linear fixtures about 2/3 of the table length.
Height of the fixture
A fixture looks in proportion at about 2.5 to 3 in of height per foot of ceiling height.
Hanging height
Over a table, 30–36 in from tabletop to the bottom of the fixture at an 8 ft ceiling, plus 3 in per extra foot. With no table, keep at least 7 ft of clearance.
Chandelier Size by Table
| Table | Round fixture diameter | Linear fixture length |
|---|---|---|
| 36 × 60 in | 18–24 in | 40 in |
| 48 in round | 24–32 in | — |
| 40 × 72 in | 20–26.5 in | 48 in |
| 42 × 96 in | 21–28 in | 64 in |
Hang the bottom 30–36 in above the table with 8 ft ceilings, 33–39 in at 9 ft and 36–42 in at 10 ft. For style ideas, see farmhouse dining room lighting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Choose a fixture between half and two-thirds of the table's width. For a 40-inch-wide table, that's about 20 to 26.5 inches across. For a long rectangular table, a linear fixture about two-thirds of the table's length works well.
With 8-foot ceilings, hang it so the bottom is 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop. Add about 3 inches for every extra foot of ceiling height.
Add the room's length and width in feet; that number in inches is a good diameter. A 12 by 14 foot room suits a fixture about 26 inches across. Keep at least 7 feet of clearance below it.
Aim for about 2.5 to 3 inches of fixture height for every foot of ceiling height. With 8-foot ceilings, that's roughly 20 to 24 inches tall.
